Artist’s statement:

“100 seemed like a lot, although the number of abandoned houses in Detroit is more like 12,000. Encompassing an area of over 138 square miles, Detroit has enough room to hold the land mass of San Francisco, Boston, and Manhattan Island, yet the population has fallen from close to 2 million citizens, to most likely less than 800,000. With such a dramatic decline, the abandoned house problem is not likely to go away any time soon.”

I swear to all things holy whenever ruin porn and the glamorous urban blight of Detroit comes across my dash I want to break things. The city is not a playground for outsiders to take pictures of and make a name from. Detroit is more than abandoned houses, there are still people here even though the national conversation and perception doesn’t want to acknowledge it. Detroit is not vacant and Detroit is not destroyed because of city dwellers needing to leave (maybe look at the reasons for that instead of an old house). People live in this city and others want to come into their home and make it out like THEIR artistic vision of THOSE PEOPLE’S LIVES. No one is coming in and taking pictures of the lots and houses neighborhoods watch and guard.

And framing it just as ~people who aren’t there anymore, people abandoning the area and making this huge problem of abandoned buildings and don’t care for the land~ is a load of bullshit.

This is not cute, stop it.
